In Memoriam: Jeannette Hypes, 1923-2012

Jeannette Hypes, professor emerita of dance at Pomona College in Claremont, California, has died at the age of 89.
Hypes joined the Pomona faculty in 1957 and taught dance in the physical education department. By the early 1970s she established dance as a separate academic discipline. She retired from the college in 1988 but continued to teach a dance class for faculty and staff for many years.
Professor Hypes served as president of the National Dance Association and editor of the NDA publication, Discover Dance. She was the producer of the documentary film New Guinea Dance and Culture.
Hypes was a graduate of Bowling Green State University in Ohio. She earned a master’s degree at the Claremont Graduate School.
