There were 605 students residing on the campus of Sweet Briar College in Virginia this spring. But there is a capacity to house up to 800 students at the liberal arts college for women. The college announced that it is launching an aggressive recruiting campaign to boost enrollments to a point where the college can operate more cost-effectively, without putting additional strain on the institution’s $90 million endowment.
The college also announced that it is eliminating major degree programs in German and engineering management, as well as a minor degree program in law and society. The equivalent of 11 full-time faculty positions will be eliminated, leaving the college with the equivalent of 85 full-time positions. Each department at the college is charged with reducing non-salary expenditures by 10 percent.
A statement by the college concerning the budget cuts can be read here.
