Carleton College, the highly ranked liberal arts college in Northfield, Minnesota, has announced the promotion of 11 faculty members. Seven of the 11 are women. The appointments take effect on September 1, 2012.
Deborah S. Gross, who has been on the Carleton College faculty since 1998, was promoted to professor of chemistry. She is a graduate of Haverford College in Pennsylvania and earned a Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of California at Berkeley.
Silvia L. Lopez was promoted to professor of Spanish. She was born and raised in Latin America. Professor Lopez joined the Carleton faculty in 1997. She is a graduate of Santa Clara University in California. Dr. Lopez earned a master’s degree at the University of California at Santa Barbara and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of Minnesota.
Kimberly Smith was named professor of political science and environmental studies. She taught at Tuskegee University in Alabama for two years before joining the Carleton faculty. She holds a law degree from the University of California at Berkeley and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Michigan.
Palmar Alvarez-Blanco was promoted to associate professor of Spanish. She first joined the Carleton faculty in 2006. Dr. Alvarez-Blanco is a graduate of the University of Valladolid in Spain. She holds a master’s degree in Spanish literature from Villanova University and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado.
Devashree Gupta joined the Carleton faculty in 2006. She has now been promoted to associate professor of political science. Dr. Gupta is a graduate of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. She holds a master’s degree in international relations from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in government from Cornell University.
Meera Sehgal was promoted to associate professor of women’s and gender studies and sociology. She taught at the Center for Women’s Studies at the University of Cincinnati before coming to Carleton in 2005. Dr. Sehgal holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Poona in India. She earned a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Wisconsin.
Sarah J. Titus joined the Carleton faculty in 2006. She has now been promoted to associate professor of geology. She is a graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio and earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in geology at the University of Wisconsin.
