Suzanne Smith Appointed the Eighteenth President of SUNY-Potsdam
Dr. Smith has served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Georgia Southwestern State University since July 1, 2018. She is also a tenured professor in the department of psychology and sociology. Earlier, Dr. Smith was an administrator at Washington State University Vancouver from 1997-2018.

Beth Kegley of the University of Arkansas Wins an Award From the American Society of Animal Science
Professor Kegley’s research focus is the impact of nutrition on the immune response, disease resistance, and growth performance of beef cattle. She teaches graduate-level courses on ruminant nutrition, energetics, and mineral metabolism. She grew up on a dairy, beef, and sheep farm in Virginia.

In Memoriam: Christine M. Cano, 1962-2022

Dr. Duncan started her career at Virginia Tech in 1990 when she was the first woman hired as an assistant professor in the department of food science and technology.Dr. Duncan taught at Virginia Tech for 32 years.

The Huge Gender Gap in Academic Entomology
A new study by Karen Walker, a former scientist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, finds that women pursuing careers in entomology face persistent challenges in obtaining jobs compared to men. Among entomologists obtaining a Ph.D. between 2001 and 2018, 17 men had earned full-professor status in university entomology departments. Just one woman had obtained full professor status.

Shaina Phenix Awarded the Miller Williams Poetry Prize from the University of Arkansas Press
Shaina Phenix, an assistant professor of English at Elon University in North Carolina, is the winner of the 2023 Miller Williams Poetry Prize from the University of Arkansas Press. Phenix will receive a cash prize, and her manuscript To Be Named Something Else will be published in the Miller Williams Poetry Series in the spring of 2023.
