Women Still Vastly Underrepresented as First Authors of Medical Journal Articles
After examining articles in six of the world’s leading medical journals over the past 20 years, researchers from three U.S. universities found that women were just 34 percent of the lead authors. Gloria Dyc was Regents Professor of English and a professor of arts and letters on the Gallup Campus of the University of New Mexico. Professor Dyc joined the faculty at the University of New Mexico in 1988.
In Memoriam: Shirley Ann Mount Hufstedler, 1925-2016
Shirley Hufstedler was the nation’s first secretary of the Department of Education. She also served on the board of trustees of the California Institute of Technology for 39 years.
In Memoriam: Maria Teresa Velez, 1946-2016
Since 1996, Dr. Velez served as associate dean of the Graduate College at the University of Arizona. She taught in the departments of psychology, family studies, Mexican American studies, women’s and gender studies as well as the Center for Latin American Studies.
University of New Mexico Is Making It Easier for Breastfeeding Mothers
The University of New Mexico reports that it has set up 21 different lactation stations on its campus. In the 2013-14 academic year there were 6,689 log-ins to use the lactation stations on campus. In the 2014-15 academic year, there were 14,757 separate sessions at the university’s lactation centers. This is 121 percent increase.
