The University of Pittsburgh Names Christine Kasper Dean of Its School of Nursing
For the past four years, Dr. Kasper has served as dean of the University of New Mexico’s College of Nursing. Before joining the University of New Mexico faculty, Dr. Kasper served as a senior nurse executive in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Nursing Services. She will begin her new job on January 1.

Felicia Smith of the University of New Mexico Honored by the American Society of Mammalogists
As a mammologist, Dr. Smith focuses her research interests on paleoecological and evolutionary research — specifically the effects of climatic change and biodiversity loss on mammals. Professor Smith has published three books or edited volumes, and over 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles.
In Memoriam: Anne Bail Howard, 1927-2022
Professor Howard taught and directed the remedial English program at the University of New Mexico before joining the faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno in 1963. She was the only woman on the English department faculty at that time. She taught at the university for 37 years and was instrumental in the establishment of the women’s studies program.

Alice V. Letteney, chancellor of the Valencia campus of the University of New Mexico, has announced that she will retire on July 31 and Lynn Morton, president of Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina will retire at the end of the academic year.
Pamela Cheek Honored for Her Book on Women Authors of the Eighteenth Century
Pamela L. Cheek, associate provost of student success and professor of French and comparative literary studies at the University of New Mexico, has been awarded the 2022 Lauren Shannon Prize from the Navonic Institute for European Studies, which is housed at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

In Memoriam: Deborah Clarke Rifenbary, 1950-2021
Dr. Rifenbary joined the faculty at the University of New Mexico in 1990 as an assistant professor of counselor education. In addition to serving as interim dean, she served as chair of the department of individual, family, and community education. Dr. Rifenbary retired in 2020.

Dr. Gutierrez has been serving as vice president of instruction at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, California. She also was an instructor in educational leadership at San Francisco State University. Earlier, Dr. Gitierrez was dean of language arts and as acting president at Skyline College in San Bruno, California, and associate dean at Cascadia College in Bothel, Washington.

For the First Time, the University of Michigan Is Naming an Academic Building for a Woman
For the first time in its history, the University of Michigan has named an academic building to honor a woman. The building that houses the Life Sciences Institute, a hub for bioscience research, will be known as Mary Sue Coleman Hall. Dr. Coleman was president of the university from 2002 to 2014.

Helen Damico was professor emerita of medieval language and literature at the University of New Mexico. A native of Greece, she taught at the university for 31 years.
Valerie Nurr’araaluk Davidson Will Be the First Woman President of Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage
Davidson is well known to Alaskans, having served as commissioner of the Alaska Department of Health & Social Services and then lieutenant governor. She previously served as senior director of legal and intergovernmental affairs for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.
