President of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York Is Stepping Down
Robin L. Garrell has served as president since August 1, 2020. Dr. Garrell had come under fire in August for the hiring of Marc Lamont Hill as the Presidential Professor of Urban Education. Professor Hill has been criticized for his remarks relating to the state of Israel.
Donna Fry Is the New Leader of the University of Michigan-Flint
Dr. Fry has been serving as the dean of the College of Health Sciences at the Flint campus since 2015. She holds a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy and a Ph.D. in kinesiology and exercise science from the University of Michigan.
In Memoriam: Ulku Ulkusal Bates, 1938-2023
A native of Romania, Dr. Bates began teaching career at Oakland University in Michigan, and the University of Michigan, where she taught Islamic and Chinese art history. In 1971, she joined the faculty at Hunter College in New York City and served on the faculty there for 37 years.

University of Alabama at Birmingham Scholar Recognized by the American Society of Preventive Oncology
Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, a professor who holds the Webb Endowed Chair of Nutrition Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, was awarded the 2023 Joseph F. Fraumeni, Jr. Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Society of Preventive Oncology. The award is given annually to an outstanding scientist in the area of preventive oncology, cancer control and/or cancer prevention.

Cornell’s Melody Zeng to Be Honored by the American Association of Immunologists
As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan School of Medicine, Melody Seng was among the first to discover that a class of antibodies called IgG recognizes gut bacteria for maintenance of host-microbe symbiosis in the intestine. Dr. Zeng established her lab at Weill Cornell Medicine in 2019.
Miriam Mobley Smith Wins Leadership Award From the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists
Miriam Mobley Smith is the interim dean of the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. Prior to coming to the University of Hawai’i in 2021, the veteran pharmacy academic served as interim dean and visiting professor at the Northeastern University Bourvé College of Health Sciences in Boston and as dean and tenured professor at the Chicago State University College of Pharmacy.
Harriet B. Nembhard Will Be the Next President of Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California
A nationally respected leader in the field of industrial and operations engineering, Dr.Nembhard currently serves as dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Iowa. Before coming to Iowa in 2020, Dr. Nembhard was the Eric R. Smith Professor of Engineering and head of the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University.
Professor Ila Fiete From MIT Wins the Swartz Prize From the Society for Neuroscience
Professor Fiete is being honored for breakthrough research modeling hippocampal grid cells, a component of the navigational system of the mammalian brain. “Fiete’s body of work has already significantly shaped the field of neuroscience and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future,” according to a statement by the Society of Neuroscience.
Jennifer Rexford Named Provost at Princeton University
Dr. Rexford is the Gordon Y.S. Wu Professor in Engineering and a professor and chair in the department of computer science at the university. She joined Princeton’s faculty as a full professor in 2005.
