In Memoriam: Christine Grant, 1936-2021
Dr. Grant came to the University of Iowa in 1968. After earning bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, she was named director of the women’s athletic department at the university. She held that position until 2000.

Veena Prahlad, an associate professor of biology at the University of Iowa, conducted research on roundworms and found that a mother roundworm release serotonin when she senses danger. The serotonin travels from her central nervous system to warn her unfertilized eggs, where the warning is stored, so to speak, and then passed to offspring after conception.

Yale’s Debra Fischer to Lead the Division of Astronomical Sciences at the National Science Foundation
Dr. Fischer is the Eugene Higgins Professor of Astronomy at Yale University. Dr. Fischer will relocate to Washington, D.C. for the new job, but will continue to oversee her Yale research. She is the first Yale faculty member to be selected for the role.

In Memoriam: Ava Preacher, 1953-2021
Preacher taught at the University of Iowa and Wayne State University in Detroit before coming to the University of Notre Dame in 1985. She was director of the gender studies program for three years and served as an assistant dean in the College of Arts and Letters for a quarter-century.

For the first time in its history, the University of Michigan has named an academic building to honor a woman. The building that houses the Life Sciences Institute, a hub for bioscience research, will be known as Mary Sue Coleman Hall. Dr. Coleman was president of the university from 2002 to 2014.

Since 2016, Dr. Wilson has served as executive vice president and vice president for academic affairs for the University of Illinois System. Earlier at the University of Illinois, she served as the Harry E. Preble Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and as head of the department of communication.
In Memoriam: Frances Degen Horowitz, 1932-2021
Dr. Horowitz served as president of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York from 1991 to 2005. Earlier, Dr. Horowitz distinguished herself as a developmental psychologist and administrator at the University of Kansas.

In Memoriam: Helen Pittas Damico, 1931-2020
Helen Damico was professor emerita of medieval language and literature at the University of New Mexico. A native of Greece, she taught at the university for 31 years.
Kristin Sobolik Is the New Chancellor of the University of Missouri-St. Louis
Dr. Sobolik has served as interim chancellor since last September. Before being named interim chancellor last fall, Dr. Sobolik served as provost and executive vice chancellor at the St. Louis campus since 2017. In 2013, she was appointed dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.
