St. Mary’s College Reverses Its Decision to Admit Any Student Who Identifies as a Woman
In an email to the college’s community, Saint Mary’s College President Katie Conboy said the university is reverting back to its prior policy of only admitting biological women.
In Memoriam: Ann Kramer Clark, 1943-2023
Dr. Clark earned a bachelor’s degree at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in philosophy the University of Texas at Austin. There she was the only woman in her graduating class. She ten taught at St. Mary’s College in Indiana for 41 years.

In Memoriam: Carol Marion Wick, 1932-2021
Dr. Wick joined the history department faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1965. She was promoted to full professor in 1976. Professor Wick served as vice chancellor for academic affairs for four years and also was chair of the faculty and state secretary of the Association of University of Wisconsin Faculty.
Angélica Garcia Selected as the Next President of Berkeley City College in California
Before being named president of Berkeley City College, Dr. Garcia has been serving as the vice president of student services at Skyline College, a community college in San Bruno, California. She will begin her new job on May 7.
Jill Tiefenthaler Will Be the Next Chief Executive Officer of the National Geographic Society
Jill Tiefenthaler, president of Colorado College since 2011, will leave her post this summer to become the chief executive officer of the National Geographic Society. Dr. Tiefenthaler will be the first woman to lead the society in its 132-year history.
Katie Conboy Selected to Be the Next President of St. Mary’s College in Indiana
Since 2013, Dr. Conboy has served as provost and senior vice president at what is now Simmons University in Boston. Earlier, she was a professor of English literature and later provost at Stonehill College in North Easton, Massachusetts. She will become president of St. Mary’s College on June 1.
St. Mary’s College in Indiana Enters Into Partnership With a Women’s University in China
Under the agreement with Shandong Women’s University in Jinan, China, each semester, both institutions can send two students to the opposite host university, free of tuition. Faculty will participate in a similar exchange program.
Central New Mexico Community College Appoints Tracy Hartzler as Its Next President
Hartzler is currently the college’s vice president for finance and operations. She first joined the staff at the college in 2015. Hartzler is expected to take over for Katharine Winograd, who has led the Albuquerque community college for the past 12 years sometime in early 2020.
Change in Leadership at St. Mary’s College in Indiana
Janice Cervelli, president of St. Mary’s College in Indiana, has recently announced her resignation. The college’s provost, Nancy Nekvasil, will take over as interim president. The college will not begin their search for a permanent president until summer 2019. Therefore, Dr. Nekvasil will serve in her new role as interim president until summer 2020.
In Memoriam: Mary Louise Gude, 1939-2013
She taught in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Notre Dame and from 1998 to 2006 she was the university’s vice president for student affairs.
