Dr. Ferguson was a professor of pediatrics at Howard University in Washington, D.C. for nearly four decades. In addition to her work as an administrator for the College of Medicine, she studied the growth and development of children, with a particular focus on sick cell anemia.
Dr. Wade-Gayles taught English and women's studies at Spelman College in Atlanta for over four decades. Her scholarship centered on African American women's literature.
In 1992, Dr. Hatton became the first woman president of South Carolina State University. Later in her career, she served as president of Knoxville College in Tennessee.
Dr. Sinkford was the first woman to ever lead a dental school in the United States, serving as dean of her alma mater, the College of Dentistry at Howard University, from 1975 to 1991.
The appointments are Marie Johns at Howard University, Jennifer Jennings at Princeton University, Sarah Reisman at the California Institute of Technology, Jeanne Gillespie at the University of Southern Mississippi, and Diana Montaño at Washington University.
Dr. Dixon has had a pioneering career in pediatric surgery and academic medicine. In 2004, she became the first Black woman in the United States to become board-certified in pediatric surgery. For the past three years, she has served as the first Black woman dean of the Howard University College of Medicine.

The American Philosophical Society (APS), the oldest learned society in North America, has announced the election of 38 new members. Of the 28 new members from the United States, 12 are women with current ties to the academic world.
