Dr. Mitchell served as the chief diversity officer at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and was an affiliate professor in the department of counseling and special education in the university’s School of Education.

Mary Maples Dunn served as the eighth president of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, from 1985 to 1995. Later, she was the inaugural dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study.

In Memoriam: Martha A. Adams, 1926-2017
Martha “Marty” Adams was a long-time coach, administrator and faculty member at Pennsylvania State University. She was appointed to the faculty in 1955 and was instrumental in the establishment of intercollegiate sports for women at Penn State. Adams retired in 1987 as an assistant dean for undergraduate programs.
In Memoriam: Ann Johnson, 1965-2016
Ann Johnson, an associate professor of science and technology studies at Cornell University in Ithaca New York. Dr. Johnson joined the faculty at Cornell in 2015. Previously, she was an associate professor at the University of South Carolina.
In Memoriam: Debra Saunders-White, 1957-2016
Debra Saunders-White, the 11th chancellor of North Carolina Central University in Durham, died on November 26. Dr. Saunders-White was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2015 and took a medical leave of absence in August 2016.
The Higher Education Ties of the Nation’s First Vietnamese-American Woman in Congress
Stephanie Murphy, an instructor of business and social entrepreneurship at Rollins College, defeated 23-year Republican incumbent John Mica by just over 10,000 votes in Florida’s Seventh Congressional District. When she takes office in January, Murphy will be the first Vietnamese-American woman to serve in the U.S. Congress.

Professor Blank taught at the College of William and Mary for 24 years. She specialized in Shakespeare, Renaissance poetry and poetics, linguistics and literature, Renaissance gender and sexuality.

Dr. Macauley was vice president for research and a senior fellow at Resources for the Future, a Washington think tank. She taught at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore from 1989 to 2008.
Krista Newkirk Appointed the Tenth President of Converse College in South Carolina
Krista Newkirk, chief of staff at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, will become president of Converse College on July 1. The college enrolls about 825 women in its undergraduate programs and more than 500 students in graduate programs.
