In Memoriam: Linda Howard Watkins, 1943-2022
After earning an MLIS degree from what is now Simmons University in Boston, Linda Watkins was hired as a full-time librarian at the School of Library and Information Science. She served on the staff there for 33 years until her retirement in 2014.
Yale University’s Alison Gilchrest Awarded the Forbes Medal by the American Institute for Conservation
Presented occasionally, the medal honors individuals whose work on a national or international platform has significantly advanced the preservation of cultural heritage. Only 11 individuals, including Gilchrest, have received the Forbes Medal since its inception in 1994.

In Memoriam: Samella Sanders Lewis, 1923-2022
In 1970, Dr. Lewis joined the faculty at Scripps College in Claremont, California, where she was the first Black scholar to be awarded tenure. The Samella Lewis Collection of Contemporary Art was created by Scripps College in her honor in 2007.
Study Finds Breastfed Babies Have Better Cognitive Abilities Through at Least Age 14
A new study led by researchers at the University of Oxford in England shows that babies who were breastfed for six months or longer scored higher on tests measuring verbal and spatial relations skills up until age 14 when compared with kids who weren’t breastfed as babies even after adjusting for socioeconomic status and the mother’s level of education.

Harvard University’s Sheila Jasanoff to Receive the 2022 Holberg Prize
The Holberg Prize was established by the Norwegian Parliament in July 2003 and was awarded for the first time in 2004. It comes with a cash award valued at approximately $670,000. Professor Jasanoff is being recognized for her pioneering career in the field of science and technology studies.

Dr. Crossen began her career at the University of Massachusetts in 1985, eventually rising to the rank of full professor. From 1989 to 1991 she served as deputy provost and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and from 1994 to 1997, she was as interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs.
