Dr. Kedrowski is a professor of political science at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. She is also the director of the Center for Civic Learning and co-director of the John C. Harvard University’s Laurel Thatcher Ulrich Awarded the Evans Biography Award
The Evans Awards, given out by the the Mountain West Center for Regional Studies at Utah State University, honor the best books that focus on the stories of people who shaped the character on the interior West. The award comes with a $10,000 prize.
Six Women Scholars Appointed to Dean Posts in Higher Education
The new deans are Martha Spack at Arkansas State University, Marina Kaufman Holz at New York Medical College, Kathleen M. Hagerty at Northwestern University in Illinois, Kimberly Durham at Nova Southeastern University in Florida, Joan Phillips at Barry University in Miami, and Lynn Rainville at Sweet Briar College in Virginia.
Five Women Scholars Honored with Notable Awards
The honorees are Alicia nails of Wayne State University in Detroit, Nancy Weiss Malkiel, professor emerita at Princeton University, Mia Moody-Ramirez of Baylor University in Waco, Texas, Karen Kirkhart of Syracuse University in New York, and Carolyn B. Murrray of the University of California Riveraide.
The Gender Gap in Medical School Enrollments Is Disappearing
New data from the Association of American Medical Colleges shows that during the 2017-18 academic year, there were 43,571 women enrolled in U.S. medical schools and 46,571 men. In 2017, for the first time in history, women outnumbered men as first-year medical school matriculants.
Women Scientists Receive More Negative Comments on YouTube Than Men
The data showed that 14 percent of the comments posted on videos made by women were critical, compared to just six percent for men. Nearly 5 percent of comments were related to the woman’s appearance. Only 1.4 percent of the comments on men’s videos were related to appearance.
A Report Card on University Performance on Hiring Women Coaches for Women’s Athletic Teams
Nationwide, women were 41. 5 percent of all head coaches of women’s teams at 86 colleges and universities that were members of seven major athletic conferences. The percentage varied greatly by sport. For example, 95.7 percent of field hockey coaches were women but there were no women head coaches in triathlon or alpine skiing.
Three Women Scholars Promoted to Full Professor at Princeton University in New Jersey
Amy Borovy was appointed full professor of East Asian studies at Princeton. Yael Niv was promoted to professor of psychology and a professor at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute and Sarah Rivett was named a full professor of English and American studies.

A new report from the U.S. Department of Education finds that only 4.6 percent of women who graduated from college in 2008 were employed in STEM fields in 2012. For men the figure was 20.0 percent.

A new study by researchers at the T.H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard University presents evidence that airline flight attendants have higher rates of several types of cancer including breast, uterine, and cervical cancer. Sweet Briar College Reports Encouraging News on New Enrollments
As of late June, a total of 129 new students have enrolled for the fall semester. This includes 114 new, first-year students and 15 transfer students. The number of new students on campus this fall will be at least 42 percent higher than was the case a year ago.

Three Women Scholars Appointed to Endowed Faculty Chairs
Laura R. Olson was named the J. Strom Thurmond Professor of Political Science at Clemson University. Wendy W. Chapman was appointed to a Jon M. Huntsman Presidential Faculty Chair at the University of Utah, and Deborah L. Nelson has been named the Helen B. and Frank L. Sulzberger Professor at the University of Chicago.

The Catholic Theological Society of America described Dr. Copeland as a “prolific, profound and pioneering scholar” who has “contributed generously to the academy, to the pastoral life of the church and to the community.”
A New Study by Three Women Scholars Shows Why the Gender Gap in Physics Matters
The authors state that “women are especially underrepresented in physics because of a complex interaction of factors, including an unusually chilly climate for women, worse policies and resources for female faculty, and pervasive cultural stereotypes about the inaccessibility and masculine nature of physics.”
Letters of Recommendation for Women More Likely to Raise Doubt of Their Competence
The study revealed that, on average, letters written for women were more likely to contain a doubt-raiser than letters written for men (regardless of whether a man or a woman wrote the letter). The researchers defined “doubt-raisers” as phrases or statements that question an applicant’s aptness for a job.
Ann E. Cudd Selected to Be the Next Provost at the University of Pittsburgh
Since 2015, Dr. Cudd has served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Boston University. Earlier, she was vice provost and dean of undergraduate studies at the University of Kansas. Dr. Cudd came to the University of Kansas in 1988 and was named a Distinguished Professor of Philosophy in 2012.
University of Massachusetts Study Examines Gender Diversity in Silicon Valley Firms
The data showed that 70 percent of total managerial and tech professionals in the large Silicon Valley Tech firms are men. Men hold 79 percent of all executive positions. The authors did find 12 firms where women made up a majority of the workforce.
A Diverse Group of Women Scholars Promoted and Granted Tenure at Connecticut College
At highly rated Connecticut College in New London, Waed Athamneh was appointed associate professor of Arabic studies, Priya Kohli was promoted to associate professor of statistics, and Mónika López-Anuarbe was named an associate professor of economics.
