Examining proposals for research time on the Hubble Space Telescope, scholars from the Univerity of Colorado and the University of Memphis found that eliminating all gender identifying information from the proposals had a significant positive effect on the success rate of women scientists.
Adding Women to Corporate Boards Impacts the Efficiency of Product Recalls
A new study led by Kaitlin Wowak, assistant professor of information technology, analytics, and operations in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, finds that products that injure or kill consumers are recalled much faster when there are women on the board of the company that makes the product.
In Memoriam: Cheryl Ann Wall, 1948-2020
Professor Cheryl Wall focused on African-American literature, American literature, and feminist criticism. She first joined the faculty at Rutgers University in 1972. and had planned on retiring this year.

Report Examines If There Is Gender Bias at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
A new study by Science magazine finds that in 2011, women led 27 percent of the labs in the Division of Intramural Research. Today the figure is 23 percent. In contrast, at leading children’s research hospitals comparable percentages of women running research labs were between 30 percent and 47 percent.

Indiana University trustees have approved the appointment of 15 faculty members as Distinguished Professors. This is the highest academic title at the university. Of the 15 new Distinguished Professors, four are women: Lisa Blomgren Amsler, Lynda Bonewald, Lynda Bonewald, and Marietta Simpson.

In 2018, White women earn 79 percent of what is earned by White men. But African American women earn only 62 cents to the dollar compared to the earnings of White men. Hispanics women earned only 54 cents for every dollar earned by White men.

Maurie McInnis is a cultural historian and since 2016 has served as executive vice president and provost at the University of Texas at Austin. Previously, she spent nearly 20 years at the University of Virginia, rising to the post of vice provost for academic affairs. She will become president of Stony Brook University on July 1.

Study Finds an Alarming Rate of Tobacco Smoking Among Low-Income Pregnant Women
In a recent study, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that 7.2 percent of women in the U.S. who gave birth in 2016 smoked while pregnant. But a new study led by Karen Tabb Dina, a professor of social work at the University of Illinois. suggests that the rate for low-income women is at least twice as high.
In Memoriam: Ellen Kay Compton, 1938-2020
In 1980, Dr. Compton was hired to work in the special collections unit at the University of Arkansas Libraries. She remained on the staff until 2009. Dr. Compton served as president of the Arkansas Historical Association from 1986-1988.

Jami Fullerton, a professor of strategic communication at Oklahoma State was named chief editor of Journalism & Mass Communication Educator and Chrysanthi Leon, associate professor of sociology at the University of Delaware, was named deputy director of the university’s honors program.

Characteristics such as affluence, residential stability, and perceptions of neighborhood support and stress showed a significant association with women’s use of sex-specific preventive care (such as Pap smears, breast exams, and mammograms). Swarthmore College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution in suburban Philadelphia, has announced the promotion of Linda Chen to professor of mathematics. Also promoted to full professor are Bakirathi Mani in English and Tomoko Sakomura in art history.
