Janet E. Snyder, professor and director of the art history program at West Virginia University, is the recipient of the Award for Excellence in Scholarly Research from the Southeastern College Art Conference. Professor Snyder is being honored for her book, Early Gothic Column-Figure Sculpture in France: Appearance, Materials, and Significance (Ashgate Publishing, 2011). The book, which includes many of Professor Snyder’s own photographs, is an investigation of church portal structure in France from the 1130 to 1170.
Professor Snyder joined the faculty at West Virginia University in 1997. A graduate of Wichita State University, she holds a master of fine arts degree from the University of Wisconsin and a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Columbia University.
Dr. Snyder is co-editor of Blanche Lazzell: The Life and Work of an American Modernist (West Virginia University Press, 2004) and Encountering Medieval Textiles and Dress: Objects, Texts, Images (Palgrave Macmillan, 2002).
