In Memoriam: Marietta Culhane, 1930-2025

Marietta Culhane, a gifted mathematician who served as an administrator at Essex Community College in New Jersey and Neuman University in Aston, Pennsylvania, died on January 6 at the Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pennsylvania. She was 94 years old.

Dr. Culhane was member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 71 years. Born in Chicago, she earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Villanova University in suburban Philadelphia, a master’s degree in English from St. Bonaventure University in New York, and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Culhane began her teaching career at the elementary school at the Shrine of the Little Flower in Baltimore for one year. She taught high school for the next 11 years at the Catholic High School of Baltimore and Towson Catholic High School. She later served as dean of instruction at Essex Community College and as academic dean and instructor at Neumann University for nine years.

During her career, Dr. Culhane conducted over 250 math workshops in 18 states, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands and authored a National Science Foundation Institute on Math at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal from Pope John Paul II in 2004.
