Association for Women Geoscientists Honors René Shroat-Lewis for Mid-Career Excellence

René Shroat-Lewis, associate professor of geology at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has received the 2024 Mid-Career Excellence Award in Academia and Research from the Association for Women Geoscientists. She was honored for her innovative teaching contributions and outstanding student mentorship.

In 2012, Dr. Shroat-Lewis began her career with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock as an instructor in the department of earth sciences. After three years, she transitioned to a tenure-track position. She was granted the title of associate professor with tenure in 2021. In addition to her teaching position, she has served as co-director of the Academy for Teaching and Learning Excellence and a facilitator for the Mobile Institute on Science Teaching. She has mentored both graduate and undergraduate students and assisted the Disability Resource Center with designing geology courses for visually impaired students.

Dr. Shroat-Lewis received her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in geology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She holds a Ph.D. in geology from the University of Tennessee.
