In Memoriam: Nancy Vacc, 1939-2024

Nancy Vacc, professor emerita at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, passed away at the age of 84.
From 1987 to 2003, Dr. Vacc was a professor of curriculum and instruction at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She also directed the curriculum and instruction graduate studies program. Prior to her tenure with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, she held academic appointments at Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina State University, the University of Florida, and the University of Auckland in New Zealand. She also had experience teaching both elementary and middle school in New York.
For her service, Dr. Vacc received numerous awards from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro including the School of Education Teaching Excellence award, the Research Excellence award, and the School of Education Distinguished Service award. Throughout her life, Dr. Vacc and her husband supported the University of North Carolina at Greensboro by establishing an endowed professorship, two doctoral fellowships, and an endowed scholarship for the women’s golf team.
“Nancy Vacc, with her great heart and generous spirit, not only unselfishly gave the university impactful resources, but helped shape our campus, inform our values, and move us forward,” said Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr., chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Dr. Vacc earned her bachelor’s degree in music from the Crane School of Music at the State University of New York Potsdam. She received her master’s degree in elementary education and reading from the State University of New York Fredonia, and a doctorate in curriculum and teaching from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
