A Trio of Women Appointed to Dean Positions at Public Universities

Sudha Setty has been named the next dean of the City University of New York Law School, effective June 1. Professor Setty has been the dean of the Western New England University School of Law in Springfield, Massachusetts, since 2018, when she became the first woman of South Asian descent in the U.S. to serve as dean of an American Bar Association-accredited law school. She previously served as the school’s associate dean for faculty development and intellectual life and has been on the faculty there since 2006.

Professor Setty is a graduate of Stanford University, where she majored in history. She earned a juris doctorate at Columbia University.

Kathryn Elizabeth Angell will be the next dean of the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work, effective July 1. Her research and teaching focus on service delivery for adults with serious mental illness, and the intersection of mental illness with legal and justice system involvement. Dr. Angell currently is dean of the School of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

Dr. Angell is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she majored in psychology. She holds a master of social work degree and a Ph.D. in social welfare from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Sarah Gordon will serve as interim dean of the Graduate College at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville. She joined the faculty in 2018 as an associate professor of educational leadership and has held departmental leadership positions in student affairs administration and the Center for Leadership and Learning. Earlier, she was a faculty member and administrator at Oklahoma State Univerity.

Dr. Gordon holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from Oklahoma State University.
