Nancy Gutierrez, dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte since July 2005, has announced her intention to retire at the end of the 2021-22 academic year. Before coming to UNC Charlotte, she served as vice provost for academic affairs at Arizona State University, where she was a professor of English.
Dr. Gutierrez received a bachelor’s degree in English from Denison University in Granville, Ohio. She holds master’s and doctoral degrees in English literature from the University of Chicago.
Sarah Pritchard, Northwestern University’s dean of libraries and Charles Deering McCormick University Librarian for the past 15 years, will retire in 2022 after a 45-year career in research and academic libraries. Before coming to Northwestern, Pritchard worked as the university librarian at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and as director of libraries at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.
Dean Pritchard is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where she majored in French. She holds master’s degrees in French literature and library science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Gail Cohee, associate dean and director of the Sarah Doyle Center for Women and Gender at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, will step down from her posts in December. Before becoming director of the women’s center at Brown in 2001, she taught courses in British literature, literature by women, and women’s studies at Emporia State University in Kansas and at Skidmore College, the College of Saint Rose, and Siena College in New York.
Dr. Cohee holds a Ph.D. in English literature and women’s studies from Indiana University, Bloomington.
Braswell comes to her new appointment with extensive leadership experience in state government, including her current role as general counsel to Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont. In her new role, she will provide strategic oversight for the 16 campuses within Connecticut's public higher education system.
Jennifer Gaither, a lawyer by training, has been a Sullivan University faculty member for the past 25 years. She most recently served as the university's associate provost.
Dr. Crowley has served as provost at Ohio Wesleyan University since 2020. She is slated to become the nineteenth president of Kalamazoo College on July 1.
The three women named to provost positions are Nancy Marchand-Martella at the University of Northern Colorado, Lise Youngblade at Colorado State University, and Randi Storch at Western Oregon University.
Although it was initially founded as school for women, the University of Montevallo has never had a woman president. Now the university has reached a historic milestone and selected selected Michelle R. Johnston to serve as its next president.
