Five Women Full Professors at Bowdoin College in Maine Appointed to Endowed Chairs

Bowdoin College, the highly rated liberal arts college in Brunswick Maine, has named five women full professors to endowed chairs.

Collin Roesler has been named the William R. Kenan Professor of Earth and Oceanographic Science. She is an observational oceanographer who develops methods for extracting ecological and physiological information about ocean ecosystems from optical measurements. Professor Roesler earned her bachelor’s degree at Brown University in Rhode Island. She holds a master’s degree from Oregon State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington.

Jennifer Taback was named the Isaac Henry Wing Professor of Mathematics. Dr. Taback’s research lies at the intersection of algebra and geometry, focusing on metric and combinatorial properties of infinite groups. Dr. Taback earned a bachelor’s degree at Yale Univerity. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

Shu-chin Tsui has been appointed to the Bowdoin Chair in Asian Studies. Her teaching and research interests include film studies, cultural studies, and visual art studies with a focus on gender politics. Dr. Tsui earned a bachelor’s degree at Xi’an Foreign Languages University in China. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor.

Dharni Vasudevan has been named the Stanley F. Druckenmiller Professor of Chemistry and Environmental Studies. A professor at Bowdoin since 2004, Dr. Vasudevan was the chair of the department of chemistry from 2014–2018. She currently serves as associate dean for faculty development and inclusion. Her research concerns the environmental fate of chemicals, such as pharmaceuticals and pesticides in soil and aquatic environments. Professor Vasudevan holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She earned a master’s degree and aPh.D. in environmental chemistry at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Hanétha Vété-Congolo was named the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures. She joined the faculty at Bowdoin College in 2001. Her latest book is Nous Sommes Martinquaises: Pawol en Bouches de Femmes Chataignes (Editions L’Harmattan, 2020). Dr. Vété-Congolo is the current president of the Caribbean Philosophical Association and is a published poet. She holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane.
