Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, Grants Tenure to Five Women

Carleton College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution in Northfield, Minnesota, has announced that it was promoted six scholars to the rank of associate professor, effective September 1. They were also granted tenure. Five of the six scholars who were promoted are women.

Shaohua Guo was promoted to associate professor of Chinese. She joined the Carleton faculty in 2014. Earlier she was a visiting assistant professor at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. Dr. Guo earned bachelor’s and master’s degree from Beijing Normal University in China and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin.

Jessica Keating was appointed associate professor of art history. She came to Carleton in 2014 after conducting postdoctoral research at the University of Southern California. Dr. Keating obtained a bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and a Ph.D. in art history from Northwestern University. She is the author of Animating Empire: Automata, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Early Modern World (Pennsylvania State University Press, 2018).

Anna Rafferty was promoted to associate professor of computer science. She joined the faculty at Carleton College in 2014. Dr. Rafferty’s research is centered on how to apply machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to improve education. She received two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree from Stanford University. Dr. Rafferty holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley.

Prathi Seneviratne joined the Carleton College faculty in 2013. She was promoted to associate professor of economics. Dr. Seneviratne earned a bachelor’s degree from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in economics from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Julia Strand was named associate professor of psychology. She has been on the Carleton College faculty since 2011. Dr. Strand is the principal investigator for the Carleton Perception Lab, which deals with how humans perceive speech and recognize spoken words. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University in Massachusetts, and a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis.
