Eleven Women Who Are Taking on New Administrative Roles in Higher Education

Laurel A. Miner has been named chief of staff to the vice president for research and innovation at Virginia Tech. She was a senior analyst in the Office of the Under Secretary for Standards and Technology at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Dr. Miner holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and a Ph.D. in physics with a concentration in biophysics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Ashley Daniels has been promoted to manager of marketing and digital strategy at Xavier University in New Orleans. She previously served as a marketing and communications specialist.

Daniels is a graduate of Xavier University where she majored in sales and marketing with a minor in history.

Carrie White has been named assistant vice president for entrepreneurship and innovation at West Virginia University. She was the former director of the WVU LaunchLab.

Dr. White holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and an MBA from Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, a  law degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, and an educational doctorate from West Virginia University.

Maria Carla Chicuen has been appointed executive director of Florida International University’s CasaCuba, an initiative to create a center for Cuban affairs at the university. She previously led special projects in the Office of the President at Miami Dade College.

Chicuen holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Harvard University and a master’s degree in international relations from the London School of Economics an d Political Science.

Katie Miota has been named chief enrollment officer at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She has held the position on an interim basis since March. Before this appointment, she served as the university’s director of admissions.

Miota holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Alverno College in Milwaukee.

Lori Hancock has been named associate vice provost for institutional research within the Office of Planning and Assessment at Pennsylvania State University. She had held the position on an interim basis since June. Prior to this position, she served as associate director for planning and institutional research and senior research associate.

Hancock holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering and a master’s degree in information technology both from Kettering University.

Mary Long has been appointed managing director of the Global Supply Chain Institute’s Supply Chain Forum in the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee. She was managing director of the Supply Chain Management Institute at the University of San Diego’s School of Business.

Long holds a bachelor’s degree from Cleveland State University and an MBA from Ohio State University.

Farrah Manthei has been named deputy director of athletics at the University of Illinois-Chicago. She was senior associate director for student services/senior woman administrator and deputy Title IX coordinator for athletics at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Manthei holds a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Florida Gulf Coast University and a master’s degree in sport administration from Valparaiso University in Indiana.

Erin Hafkenschiel has been named executive director of mobility in the Division of Administration at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. She was director of transportation and sustainability in the Nashville mayor’s office.

Hafkenschiel holds a bachelor’s degree in political economy of industrialized societies from the University of California, Berkeley and a master’s degree in public policy and urban planning from Harvard University.

Joan Nelson has been named associate vice president for human resources at Rice University in Houston, effective this November. She currently serves as the associate vice chancellor and vice president of human resources at the University of Houston.

Nelson holds a bachelor’s degree in business and management from the University of Maryland and an MBA from the University of Houston.

Tamara Holmes Brothers has been appointed director of development at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. She was director of corporate and foundation relations at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina.

Dr. Brothers holds a bachelor’s degree in art from Hampton University in Virginia, a master’s degree in sports management from West Virginia University, and a Ph.D. in educational management from Hampton University.
