Lorraine Daston Wins the $1 Million Dan David Prize for Her Research on the History of Science

Lorraine DastonLorraine Daston, a visiting professor in the department of history at the University of Chicago and the director of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, has been selected to receive the $1 million Dan David Prize for her research on the history of science. The prize is awarded by the Dan David Foundation in conjunction with Tel Aviv University in Israel.

After being notified of the award, Professor Daston said “it is grand that the history of science, always a small, interstitial discipline lodged between the natural and social sciences and the humanities, has been recognized for its essential contributions to the understanding of the past.”

Professor Daston is the author or editor of several books including The Moral Authority of Nature (University of Chicago Press, 2003).

A native of East Lansing, Michigan, Professor Daston holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in the history of science from Harvard University.
