Marta Gutman of the City University of New York Honored by the Society of Architectural Historians

Marta Gutman, a professor of architecture at the Spitzer School of Architecture at City College of New York and a professor of art history at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, received the 2017 Spiro Kostof Award from the Society of Architectural Historians. The award is given to the author of a book that made the greatest contribution to the understanding of the growth and development of cities.

Professor Gutman was honored for her book A City for Children: Women, Architecture, and the Charitable Landscapes of Oakland, 1850-1950 (University of Chicago Press, 2014). The award was announced at the society’s 70th Annual International Conference Awards Ceremony in Glasgow, Scotland, earlier this month.

Professor Gutman is the co-editor of Designing Modern Childhoods: History, Space, and the Material Culture of Children (Rutgers University Press, 2008). Dr. Gutman is a graduate of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where she majored in art history. She earned a master of architecture degree at Columbia University in New York City and a Ph.D. in architectural and urban history from the University of California, Berkeley.
