Barbara Mikulski Joins the Faculty at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore

Barbara A. Mikulski, who recently left the United States Senate, has joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She was named a professor of public policy and adviser to the university’s president. Senator Mikulski will serve as a Homewood Professor in the department of political science but will participate in lectures, seminars and symposia throughout the university.

Professor Mikulski served five terms in the U.S. Senate from Maryland after holding a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives from Maryland for 10 years. She holds the record as longest-tenured senator from the state of Maryland and served in the U.S. Congress longer than any woman in U.S. history. Senator Mikulski will donate her papers to the Johns Hopkins University archives.

In accepting the appointment, Senator Mikulski said, “I’m proud to join the Johns Hopkins faculty and to share my expertise and experience in public policy. I am excited to teach and encourage the next generation and to assist the leadership of this internationally recognized university.”

“Being at Johns Hopkins,” she added, “enables me to continue to play a role locally in shaping Baltimore’s future while promoting a national agenda of innovation, leadership, and service.”

Professor Mikulski, now 80 years old, is a graduate of Mount Saint Agnes College, which later was incorporated into Loyola University Maryland. She earned a master of social work degree from the University of Maryland.
