In Memoriam: Alison Winter, 1965-2016

Alison Winter, a professor and historian of science and medicine at the University of Chicago, died on June 22. She was 50 years old and had suffered from a brain tumor.
Professor Winter joined the faculty at the University of Chicago in 2001. Earlier, she taught at the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Winter is the author of Mesmerized: Powers of Mind in Victorian Britain (University of Chicago Press, 1998) and Memory: Fragments of a Modern History (University of Chicago Press, 2012).
Professor Winter was a 1987 graduate of the University of Chicago. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in England.
