New Administrative Posts for 11 Women in Higher Education

Nadine Shigezawa was appointed director of the Veterans in Transition to Academic Leadership (VITAL) program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. For the past 22 years, she has served as a psychologist for the Veterans Administration.
Dr. Shigezawa holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and French, a master’s degree in psychology, and a Ph.D. in psychology, all from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Debra A. Schwinn was named the inaugural associate vice president for medical affairs at the University of Iowa. Since 2012, she served as dean of the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine at the university. Dr. Schwinn is also a professor an anesthesiology, pharmacology, and biochemistry.
Dr. Schwinn served on the faculty at Duke University before coming to the University of Iowa. She received her medical training at Stanford University.
Patricia Roy is the first full-time psychiatrist at the Counseling Center of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She was medical director of the behavioral health department for the Virginia Hospital Center. From 2008 to 2011, Dr. Roy was an instructor of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.
Dr. Roy is a graduate of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, where she majored in psychology. She earned a medical degree at Drexel University in Philadelphia.
Elizabeth Breul O’Rourke was appointed president of the University of Rhode Island Foundation. She was senior vice president for principal gifts and international advancement at Syracuse University in New York. She had been on the staff at Syracuse since 1983.
O’Rourke holds a bachelor’s degree and a master of public administration degree from Syracuse University.
Tanaya M. Walters was named vice president for student affairs at Clark Atlanta University in Georgia. She has been serving as dean of students at Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Walters holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing and a master’s degree in managerial technology from Johnson and Wales University. She is currently in the educational doctorate program at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois.
Stephanie D. Taylor is the new general counsel at West Virginia University in Morgantown. She was an attorney for the law firm Jones Day in Pittsburgh.
Taylor is a summa cum laude graduate of the Reed College of Media at West Virginia University. She graduated first in her class at the West Virginia University College of Law.
Monica Bloom was named the inaugural director of the Center for Advocacy, Response and Education (CARE) at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. She has been serving as Title IX coordinator and executive director of the Office of Institutional Equity at the university.
Bloom is a graduate of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where she majored in history. She earned her law degree at the University of Illinois.
Julie Burkhart was appointed director of community engagement at the Edwards Campus of the University of Kansas in Overland Park. She was president of the Women’s Employee Resource Group for Sprint Corporation.
Burkhart is a graduate of Kansas State University, where she majored in family life and human development. She holds a master’s degree in business communication from Fort Hays State University in Kansas.
Sarah Wake is a new assistant provost and Title IX coordinator at the University of Chicago. She was director of the Office of Institutional Equity and Title IX coordinator at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.
Wake is a graduate of Loyola University in Chicago. She earned her law degree at the University of Notre Dame.
Natalie Hart is a new principal gifts officer in the Advancement Division at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg. She joined the staff at Virginia Tech in 2002 and most recently served as director of presidential initiatives.
Hart holds a bachelor’s degree in business management and a master’s degree in public and international affairs, both from Virginia Tech.
Trisha Burnett was named chief auditor in the Office of Internal Audit at the University of Oregon. She has been serving in the post on an interim basis since November. Before joining the staff at the University of Oregon in 2015, Burnett was director of internal audit for the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
Burnett is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville and holds a master’s degree in accounting from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
