A Dozen Women With New Administrative Positions in Higher Education

Susan C. Anderson was named senior vice provost for academic affairs at the University of Oregon in Eugene. She is a professor of German at the university and has been serving at interim chair of the department of East Asian languages and literatures.

Dr. Anderson is co-editor of Water, Culture, and Politics in Germany and the American West (Peter Lang Publishers, 2001).

Linda Strong-Leek is the new vice president for diversity and inclusion at Berea College in Kentucky. She will continue to perform the duties of associate vice president for academic affairs, a post she was appointed to in 2012. Prior to the joining the faculty at Berea College, Dr. Strong-Leek taught at Florida International University in Miami. She is the author of Excising the Spirit: A Literary Analysis of Female Circumcision (Africa World Press, 2009).

Dr. Stong-Leek holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from North Carolina Central University in Durham. She earned a Ph.D. at Michigan State University.

Alissa Warters was named associate provost and director of graduate programs at Francis Marion University in Florence, South Carolina. She is a professor of political science at the university and has been directing the Robert E. McNair Center for Research and Service. Professor Warters has been on the faculty at the university since 2004.

Dr. Warters holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Virginia Tech. She earned a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Tennessee.

Emily Hughes was named associate dean for faculty at the University of Iowa College of Law. She joined the faculty at the law school in 2011. Previously, she taught at the Washington University School of Law in St. Louis.

Professor Hughes is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where she majored in English. She holds a master’s degree in international relations from Yale University and a juris doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School.

Kathryn Barraclough was named director of the MBA program at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Since 2010, she has served as the director of the masters in finance program at the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr. Barraclough holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in economics and commerce from the Australian National University in Canberra.

Sheila Caldwell was named adviser to the president on diversity at the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega. She joined the university’s staff in 2013 as director of the Complete College Georgia initiative. She will continue in that post. Previously, Caldwell was state coordinator of high school initiatives for the Technical College System of Georgia.

Caldwell is a graduate of Northern Illinois University, where she majored in marketing. She holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from Argosy University and is currently in the workforce education doctoral program at the University of Georgia.

Katie L. Vale was appointed vice president for information and library services at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. She was director of digital learning at the School of Public Health at Harvard University. Before joining the staff at Harvard in 2008, Dr. Vale held administrative posts at MIT from 1992 to 2008.

Dr. Vale is a graduate of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She holds master’s and doctoral degrees in education from Boston University.

Karyn S. Hollingsworth was named executive director of university communications and marketing at Jackson State University in Mississippi. She has been serving as director of communications for the Lee Business School at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Dr. Hollingsworth is a graduate of the University of Memphis, where she majored in journalism. She holds master’s and doctoral degrees in education from the University of Mississippi.

Ann Marie Capo was promoted to vice president for quality and patient services and chief nursing officer at the University of Connecticut Health Center. She has been serving as associate vice president of clinical effectiveness and patient safety.

Capo began her career at the university health center as a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Fatimah R. Stone was appointed senior associate director of the Office of Equity and Inclusion at the University of Delaware. She had served as a human resources consultant at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

Stone is a graduate of Fairleigh-Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey and the Tulane Law School in New Orleans.

Deborah J. Coffin was chosen to become the vice chancellor for advancement at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Since 2011, she has been serving as vice chancellor for student affairs. From 2008 to 2011, Coffin was dean of students.

Coffin holds two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree in human communication theory from the University of Northern Colorado.

Katie Christensen is the new curator of education and statewide engagement at the University of Wyoming Art Museum. She is the former executive director of the Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts in Saratoga, Wyoming.

Christensen is a graduate of the University of Wyoming and holds a master of fine arts degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
