According to new report from the National Science Foundation, in 2013, there were 1,142,000 scientists and engineers employed in the United States who held the credential of a doctoral degree. Of these, 409,000 were women. Thus, women made up 35.8 percent of all employed scientists and engineers who held doctoral degrees.
In some fields, the percentage of women among all employed scientists and engineers was lower. For example, women with doctoral degrees made up 14.1 percent of the employed computer scientists, 23.1 percent of the chemists, 18.8 of the physical scientists, and 13.7 percent of the engineers.
