
Marshall is a native of South Africa and became a United States citizen in 1977. She is a graduate of the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and the Yale Law School. She also holds a master’s degree in education from Harvard University.
After graduating from Yale Law School, she practiced law and was made a partner at the prestigious Boston firm, Choate, Hall & Stewart. From 1992 to 1996, she served as vice president and general counsel at Harvard University.
Marshall served for 16 years on the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts and was the first woman to serve as chief justice of that court. She has served on the board of the Yale Corporation since 2004.
