Four Women Appointed President of Professional Academic Organizations

Patricia Brooks, professor of psychology at the College of Staten Island and the City University of New York Graduate Center, has been appointed president of the Eastern Psychological Association.

At CUNY, Dr. Brooks directs the Language Learning Laboratory and holds appointments with the doctoral programs in psychology, educational psychology, and speech, language, and hearing sciences. In her scholarly work, she studies individual differences in language learning and development, as well as effective teaching and learning practices.

Dr. Brooks received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in psychology from New York University.

Madeline Clark, associate professor of counselor education, school psychology, and human services at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has been named president-elect of the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision.

Dr. Clark joined the UNLV faculty in 2023, after seven years teaching at the University of Toledo in Ohio. Her academic work focuses on poverty and social class issues in counseling, specifically best practices and improvement of client outcomes.

Dr. Clark is a three-time graduate of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology, a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling, and a Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision.

Victoria Kress, distinguished professor of psychological sciences and counseling at Youngstown State University in Ohio, has been elected president of the American Counseling Association.

Currently, Dr. Kress serves as counseling clinic director and director of the clinical mental health and addictions counseling programs at Youngstown State University. Her background includes extensive clinical experience in community mental health centers, hospitals, residential treatment facilities, and college counseling centers. She previously served as director of advocacy for the National Board of Certified Counselors.

Dr. Kress is a graduate of Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio, where she double-majored in psychology and sociology with minors in biology and dance. She holds a master’s degree in community counseling and a Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision and clinical mental health counseling from the University of Akron in Ohio.

Rowan Lockwood, professor of geology at the College of William and Mary in Virginia, has been named president of the Paleontological Society.

A William and Mary faculty member since 2001, Dr. Lockwood’s research centers around paleobiology. Her work aims to understand how extinction and environmental change influence the evolution and ecology of fossil marine invertebrates.

Dr. Lockwood is a graduate of Yale University, where she double-majored in geology and geophysics and organismal biology. She holds a master’s degree in paleontology from the University of Bristol in England and a Ph.D. in evolutionary biology from the University of Chicago.
