Ana Fostel Wins the Ross Prize From the Foundation for Advancement of Research in Financial Economics
A native of Uruguay, Ana Fostel is a professor of economics at the University of Virginia. The Ross Prize is presented to recognize and encourage significant contributions to research in financial economics. Professor Fostel will share the prize with her colleague John Geanakoplos, the James Tobin Professor of Economics and chair of Hellenic Studies at Yale University.

Stefanie Stantcheva to Receive the 2023 A.SK Bright Mind Award From the Berlin Social Science Center
Stefanie Stantcheva is the Nathaniel Ropes Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University. The A.SK Bright Mind Award recognizes younger academics who make important contributions to political and economic reforms. She will be honored at an award ceremony in Berlin on November 4.

Jacquelyn Mosley, professor of human development and family sciences in the School of Human Environmental Sciences at the University of Arkansas, was presented the 2023 National Experiment Station Section Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award at the agInnovation fall meeting in Michigan.

The women who were appointed to named professorships are Sheila Otieno in religious studies, Kristina Meinking in world languages and cultures, Ann Cahill in philosophy, and Mary Jo Festle in history.
Melissa Gilliam Will Be the First Woman President of Boston University
Dr. Gilliam has been provost at Ohio State University since July 2021. Earlier, she was vice provost, the Ellen H. Block Distinguished Service Professor of Health Justice, and professor of obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics at the University of Chicago. She will become president of Boston University on July 1, 2024.
Anne Howsare Boyens Chosen as the Eighth President of the Iowa Valley Community College District
Since 2017, Dr. Howsare Boyens has been serving as provost at Des Moines Area Community College, Urban Campus in Des Moines. She began her tenure at Des Moines Area Community College in 2003 as a counselor.
Harvard University’s Claudia Goldin to Receive the Nobel Prize in Economics
Professor Goldin has collected over 200 years of data from the U.S., allowing her to demonstrate how and why gender differences in earnings and employment rates have changed over time. She has shown that the bulk of this earnings difference is now between men and women in the same occupation and that it largely arises with the birth of the first child.
McKinsey & Company Report Examines Women’s Progress in the Workplace
Since 2015, the number of women in the C-suite has increased from 17 to 28 percent, and the representation of women at the vice president and senior vice president levels has also improved significantly. But, for every 100 men promoted from entry-level positions to manager, 87 women were promoted.
Elaine Howard Ecklund of Rice University Selected as President of the Religious Research Association
Dr. Ecklund joined the faculty at Rice University in 2008 as an assistant professor of sociology, after teaching at the University at Buffalo. She was promoted to full professor in 2013. She also serves as the director of the university’s Boniuk Institute for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance.
In Memoriam: Constance Parry Faulkner, 1936-2023
Dr. Faulkner taught political economy, cultural and women studies, and social theory at Fairhaven College, Western Washington University, from 1968 to her retirement in 1990. She also taught at the University of Utah.

The National Institutes of Health to Establish Academic Maternal Health Research Centers of Excellence
The centers of excellence include 10 research centers, a data innovation and coordinating hub and an implementation science hub. Together, these institutions will work to design and implement research projects to address the biological, behavioral, environmental, sociocultural and structural factors that affect pregnancy-related complications and deaths.
In Memoriam: Evelyn Fox Keller, 1936-2023
Dr. Keller joined the MIT faculty in 1992 after teaching at a large number of prestigious institutions. That year, she received a MacArthur Foundation “genius” award for her scholarship. The foundation called her “a scholar whose interdisciplinary work raises important questions about the interrelationships among language, gender, and science.”
Protest Held at North Dakota State University Over the Treatment of Women Administrators
On September 26, a large group of students, staff, and faculy members held a rally on the campus of North Dakota State University in Fargo protesting the treatment of women faculty and administrators on campus.
In Memoriam: Francine Oputa, 1953-2023
During her 30-year career at Fresno State, Dr. Oputa served as director of the Center for Women and Culture and director of the Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute. She retired as director of the Cross Cultural and Gender Center in 2021.

Kellee Tsai will be the next dean of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at Northeastern University in Boston. Harriette Scott was appointed dean of University College at Virginia Union University in Richmond and Louisa-Hope-Weeks is the new dean of the College of Science at the University of Nevada Reno.
Michelene Chi of Arizona State University Wins the 2023 Yidan Prize for Education Research
Dr. Chi, a Regents Professor and the Dorothy Bray Endowed Professor of Science and Teaching in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University, will receive the award in a special ceremony in December in Hong Kong, where she will receive a gold medal and a $3.8 million award to fund her research.

Women in Pediatrics Have Made Substantial Progress in Academic Publishing
From 2001 to 2022, 4,426 original research articles were studied. The results showed an increase in the proportion of women as first authors (23.7%), senior authors (22.8%), and as editorial board members (15.9%) over the 5 one-year time periods studied between 2001 and 2022.
Lynn Akey Will Be the Next Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside
Since 2019, Dr. Akey has been vice president for student success, analytics, and integrated planning at Minnesota State University, Mankato. She has served the Mankato campus since 2000 in such roles as associate vice president for institutional research, strategy, and effectiveness and assistant to the vice president for student affairs.
University of Pennsylvania Scholar to Share the Nobel Prize in Medicine
Katalin Karikó, an adjunct professor of neurosurgery and a research scientist at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is sharing this year’s Nobel Prize in Medicine. She and her colleague Drew Weissman, the Roberts Family Professor in Vaccine Research at the University of Pennsylvania, were recognized for their groundbreaking resarch which led to the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19.
Report Shows That Women Injured While in the Military Are Having a Very Tough Time in Civilian Life
A new study by the Wounded Warriors Project finds that women veterans, particularly those who were injured during their service, are more likely to present with moderate to severe symptoms of depression, PTSD, and anxiety than male warriors.
Margo DelliCarpini Selected to Lead the Commonwealth Campuses of Pennsylvania State University
Dr. DelliCarpini has been serving as chancellor and dean of Pennsylvania State University Abington. Earlier, she was vice provost for strategic educational partnerships and dean of the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She previously served as professor and dean of the College of Education at Morehead State University in Kentucky

In 2021, Dr. Montague was named the fourth president of Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tennessee. Previously, she was the fourth president of Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden, New York, from 2017 to 2021.
