Four Women Who Have Been Named Deans at Colleges and Universities

Renee Y. Chow, architect, professor, and chair of the department of architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, has accepted an offer to become the dean of the College of Environmental Design at the university.
Professor Chow holds a bachelor’s degree and a master of architecture degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Marla Love has been named the Robert W. and Elizabeth C. Staley Dean of Students at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She has been serving as interim dean of students since September 2020. Before coming to Cornell in 2017, Love was director of graduate and professional student affairs at Azusa Pacific University in California.
Dean Love received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from what is now Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 2002 and a master’s degree in higher education from the University of Michigan in 2003. She is is currently a doctoral candidate in higher education at Azusa Pacific University.
Kathryn Kay Coquemont will be the associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, effective in January. She has been serving as associate vice president for student success at Salt Lake City Community College in Utah.
Dr. Coquemont received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in education from the University of Georgia. She holds a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies from the University of Utah.
Xuemei May Cheng is the new dean of graduate studies at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. Dr. Cheng joined the faculty at Bryn Mawr in 2009. She is a professor of physics and has served as chair of the physics department.
Dr. Cheng received her bachelor’s degree in physics and a master’s degree in microelectronics and solid-state electronics from Nanjing University in China. She continued her graduate studies in physics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where she received a master’s degree in 2004 and a Ph.D. in 2006.
