Four Universities Announce the Appointment of Women Provosts

Debra J. Liebowitz was appointed provost at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. Dr. Liebowitz has been serving as provost and dean of the College of Liberal Arts and the School of Graduate Studies at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. She will start her new job on July 15.

Dr. Liebowith holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Oregon. She earned master’s and doctoral degrees in political science at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Karlyn Crowley was appointed provost at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, effective July 1. Dr. Crowley currently is the interim assistant vice president for academic affairs and an English professor at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. She has been on the staff at St. Norbert College since 2011. Dr. Crowley is the author of Feminism’s New Age: Gender, Appropriation, and the Afterlife of Essentialism (State University of New York Press, 2011).

Dr. Crowley is a graduate of Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, where she majored in English and gender and women’s studies. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Virginia.

Elizabeth Chilton was named provost and executive vice president at Washington State University, effective August 1. Since 2017, she has been serving as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Binghamton University, a campus of the State University of New York System. Earlier, Dr. Chilton spent 16 years at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst as a professor, anthropology department chair, and associate vice chancellor for research and engagement.

Dr. Chilton is a graduate of the University at Albany of the State University of New York System. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Anne F. Herzog has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. Dr. Herzog is currently dean and professor of English in the School of Arts and Sciences at Springfield College in Massachusetts. Before beginning at Springfield College in 2011, Dr. Herzog was a professor of English at West Chester University in Pennsylvania. She will begin her new job on July 13.

Dr. Herzog is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, where she majored in psychology. She holds a master’s degree in English from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and a Ph.D. in English from Rutgers University in New Jersey.
