A Quartet of Women Faculty Members Who Have Been Honored With Major Awards

Clare Cavanagh, chair of the department of Slavic languages and literatures at Northwestern University, has been selected to receive the 2018 Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The award honors her body of past work, which includes the translation of 17 volumes of poetry.
Professor Cavanagh is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.
Kathleen M. Carley, a professor in the College of Engineering and the director of the Center for the Computational Analysis of Social and Organizational Systems at Carnegie Mellon University, received the Academic Achievement Award from the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation. She was honored for her development of Dynamic Network Analysis theory.
Professor Carley is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she majored in economics and political sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Harvard University.
Ruth Weissman, the Walter A. Crowell Professor of the Social Sciences, Emerita at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy for Eating Disorders. Dr. Weissman has been on the faculty of the psychology department at Wesleyan for nearly 30 years. She is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Eating Disorders.
Dr. Weissman is a graduate of the University of Tubingen in Germany. She holds a master’s degree from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina.
Joni Shreve, a senior instructor in the department of entrepreneurship and information systems at Louisiana State University’s College of Business, received the 2018 Distinguished Professor Award from SAS Inc. The award honors a scholar who best uses SAS software to teach statistical analysis.
Dr. Shreve has been teaching at Louisiana State since 1998. She is a graduate of Louisiana State with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. She holds a master’s degree in statistics and a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Georgia.
