Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, Hires Eight Women to Its Faculty

Smith College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution for women in Northampton, Massachusetts, has announced the hiring of 13 new tenure-track faculty members. Eight of the new hires are women.
Alexis Callender was appointed an assistant professor of art. She is a former assistant professor of art at the University of Missouri. Callender is a graduate of Connecticut College, where she majored in studio art. She holds a master for fine arts degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
Jina B. Kim was hired as an assistant professor of English language and literature. When she joins the Smith College faculty in 2018, she will also teach in the women’s and gender studies program. Dr. Kim is currently a Consortium for Faculty Diversity postdoctoral fellow in the program in Critical Social Thought at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. She is a graduate of Agnes Scott College and holds a Ph.D. in English and women’s studies from the University of Michigan.
Katie Kinnard was named the Clare Boothe Assistant Professor in Computer Science and Statistical and Data Sciences at Smith. She will join the faculty next summer. Currently, she is a visiting assistant professor at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. Dr. Kinnard is a graduate of Wellesley College in Massachusetts and holds a Ph.D. in mathematics from Dartmouth College.
Elisa Kim Kulosman was appointed an assistant professor of art. She previously taught at Washington University in St. Louis. Kulosman is a graduate of Boston University, where she majored in energy and environmental policy. She holds a master of architecture degree from Washington University in St. Louis.
Yuanyuan Maggie Liu was named an assistant professor of economics. She has been working as a consultant for the World Bank Group. A native of China, Dr. Liu is a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She holds a Ph.D. in economics from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Andrea Moore is a new assistant professor of music at Smith College. Dr. Moore is a graduate of Rice University in Houston, Texas, where she majored in music. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Sara A. Newland was hired as an assistant professor of government. She will join the faculty in July 2018. Dr. Newland is a postdoctoral fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Earlier, she taught at Villanova University in Pennsylvania. Dr. Newland is a graduate of Wellesley College and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of California, Berkeley.
Sarah Witkowski is an associate professor of exercise and sport studies. She was an assistant professor at University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Dr. Witkowski is a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Delaware and a Ph.D. in exercise physiology from the University of Maryland.
