Eleven Women Taking on New Administrative Duties in Higher Education

Durba Chatterjee is the new associate vice president of institutional advancement at Virginia State University. She has more than 20 years of experience in higher education fundraising including terms at Spelman College in Atlanta and the Technical College System of Georgia.

Chatterjee is a graduate of Calcutta University in India. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Burdwan in India and an MBA from the University of Missouri.

Amy B. McIntosh was appointed associate vice chancellor for academic strategy at the City University of New York. She was acting assistant secretary for the Office of Planning, Evaluation and Policy Development in the U.S. Department of Education.

McIntosh is a graduate of Harvard University, where she majored in economics. She earned an MBA at Harvard Business School.

Crystal A. Williams was named associate provost for diversity and inclusion at Boston University, effective in October. Since 2013, she has been serving as associate vice president for strategic initiatives and a professor of English at Bates College in Maine. Earlier, she was a professor and dean for institutional diversity at Reed College in Portland, Oregon.

Williams hold a bachelor’s degree from New York University and a master of fine arts degree from Cornell University. She is the author of four volumes of poetry including Detroit as Barn (Lost Horse Press, 2014).

Shala Mills will be the next assistant vice president for graduate and extended learning at the State University of New York at New Paltz. She has been serving as director of liberal education at Fort Hays State University in Kansas.

Mills is a graduate of Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where she majored in history. She earned a law degree at the University of Kansas.

Tina L. Smith was named interim vice chancellor for equity, diversity, and inclusion and interim chief diversity officer at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She has been serving as associate vice chancellor. Dr. Smith joined the staff at the university in 2002.

Dr. Smith earned an educational doctorate at Tennessee State University in Nashville.

Meghan DeFord will be the next assistant vice president of alumni and community affairs at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. She has been serving as senior director of alumni outreach at the University of Maryland.

DeFord is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where she majored in English.

Darcell Griffith was appointed interim chief human resources officer at the University of Delaware. She has been serving as director of compensation and benefits for the university’s human resources division. She joined the human resources staff at the university in 2008.

Griffith is a graduate of Xavier University in New Orleans. She holds a certificate in human resources management from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Margaret Slattery is the new assistant dean and director of the Office for General Education at Pennsylvania State University. She has served in the post on an interim basis since last August.

Dr. Slattery is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where she majored in materials science and engineering. She holds a Ph.D. in bio-medical engineering from Pennsylvania State University

Sally Stiel was appointed senior director of alumni engagement and marketing at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. She has been serving as the advertising manager for the L’Auberge Casino and Hotel in Baton Rouge.

Stiel is a graduate of Louisiana State University, where she majored in communication studies.

Georgina Dodge was named associate provost for diversity, equity, and inclusion at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. She will also serve as an adjunct associate professor of English. Dr. Dodge has been serving as associate vice president, Title IX coordinator, and chief diversity officer at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Dodge is a graduate of the University of California, Irvine. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Janelle Kilgore has been named interim executive director of financial aid and admissions at the University of North Dakota. She has been serving as director of student financial aid.

Kilgore is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Crookston. She holds a master’s degree in higher education from the University of North Dakota.
