Three Women Scholars Granted Emerita Status at Princeton University

Princeton University in New Jersey has announced that 19 faculty members have retired and have been conferred with emeritus or emerita status. Only three of the 19 retiring faculty members are women.

Anne Case has been a professor of economics at Princeton University since 1991 and most recently was the Alexander Stewart 1886 Professor of Economics and Public Affairs. Earlier, she had taught at Harvard. Professor Case is a graduate of the University at Albany of the State University of New York System. She earned a master of public affairs degree and a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University. Her research has focused on labor economics and health economics.

Esther da Costa Meyer has retired as a professor of art and archaeology. Her research includes the study of architectural practices of colonial powers in the Global South. Professor da Costa Meyer joined the faculty at Princeton in 1998 after teaching at Yale. She is a graduate of the University of Geneva in Switzerland and earned a Ph.D. at Yale.

Joan Girgus has retired as a professor of psychology and special assistant to the dean of the faculty. She was the first woman to serve as dean of the college at Princeton. Professor Girgus joined the faculty at Princeton in 1977 after teaching at the City College of New York. She is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York and earned a Ph.D. at the New School in New York City.
