Lisel Judge, a former faculty member, athletic administrator, and the longtime women’s fencing coach at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, died on March 23 in Florida. She was 101 years old.
Judge was a native of Germany and was selected as a member of the 1936 Olympic fencing team. But she refused to compete to protest the Nazi regime. She came to the United States in 1938.
Judge was hired as the fencing coach at Brandeis in 1955 and was appointed to the faculty a year later. She coached the fencing team for 26 years, compiling a record of 169-9 in dual meets during that time period and winning 16 New England championships.
