Scripps College in Claremont, California, Has Nine New Women on Its Faculty

Scripps College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution for women in Claremont, California, has 11 new tenure-track faculty members on campus this fall. Nine of the 11 new faculty members are women.

Gabriela Bacsan is an assistant professor in the department of Spanish, Latin American, and Caribbean literatures and cultures. Dr. Bacsan is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, where she majored in political science and Spanish and Latin American literatures. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in literature from the University of California, San Diego.

Nayana Bose is a new assistant professor of economics. Her current research involves the impact of property rights for women in India. Dr. Bose is a graduate of the University of Calcutta in India, where she majored in economics. She holds a master’s degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, India. Dr. Bose earned a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Lahnna Catalino was appointed an assistant professor of psychology. Her research focuses on emotions, well being, and health. Dr. Catalino is a graduate of McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland, where she majored in communication. She earned a master’s degree in general experimental psychology from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and a Ph.D. in social psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Wendy Cheng is a new assistant professor of American studies at Scripps College. She is the author of The Changs Next Door to the Diazes: Remapping Race in Suburban California (University of Minnesota Press, 2013). Dr. Cheng is a graduate of Harvard University, where she majored in English and American language and literature. She earned a master’s degree in geography from the University of California, Berkeley and a Ph.D. in American studies and ethnicity from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Findley Finseth is an assistant professor of genomics in the W.M. Keck Science Department of Scripps, Claremont McKenna, and Pitzer Colleges. Her research focuses on th evolutionary drivers of biodiversity. Dr. Finseth is a graduate of the University of Virginia, where she majored in biology. She holds a Ph.D.  in ecology and evolution from Cornell University.

Jenna Monroy was appointed an assistant professor of biology in the W.M. Keck Science Department of Scripps, Claremont McKenna, and Pitzer Colleges. Her research involves the sensory, mechanical and neuromuscular factors that influence movement in animals and humans. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Dr. Monroy holds a Ph.D. in biology from Northern Arizona University.

Tessie Prakas was hired as an assistant professor of English. For the past two academic years, she was a visiting assistant professor at Kenyon College in Ohio. Her scholarship involves research on early modern poetry and poetics. Dr. Prakas is a graduate of the University of Cambridge in England. She earned a Ph.D. at Yale University.

Maryann Soliman is an assistant professor of Africana studies. During the 2015–16 academic year, she held a postdoctoral fellowship with the African and African American Studies Program at Washington University in St. Louis. A native of Cairo, Egypt, Dr. Soliman came to the United States as a child. She is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Soliman earned a master’s degree in history from San Francisco State University and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Pennsylvania.

Carlin Wing was named an assistant professor of media studies. She is currently writing a book with the working title: Bounce: The Material Certainty of Sporting Chance. Dr. Wing is a graduate of Harvard University, where she majored in visual and environmental studies and social anthropology. Dr. Wing earned a master of fine arts degree on photography and media at the California Institute of the Arts in Santa Clarita. She holds a Ph.D. in media, culture and communication from New York University.
