Georgia Southern University Historian Wins Book Award

Georgia Southern University Historian Michelle Haberlandstriking-beautiesMichelle Haberland, associate professor of history and the former director of women’s and gender studies at Georgia Southern University, has been awarded the H.L. Mitchell Award from the Southern Historical Association. The award recognizes the author of the best book on the southern working class.

Dr. Haberland was honored for her book Striking Beauties: Women Apparel Workers in the U.S. South, 1930-2000 (University of Georgia Press, 2015). The book examines the southern apparel industry’s impact on women during its boom years of the 1930s to its demise at the end of the 20th century.

Dr. Haberland joined the faculty at Georgia Southern University in 2002. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Florida and a Ph.D. from Tulane University in New Orleans.
