Leila Kawar Wins Best Book Award From the Law and Society Association

Leila Kawar, an assistant professor of legal studies in the department of political science at the University of Massachusetts, received the Herbert Jacob Book Prize from the Law and Society Association. The award is given to the best book of the year in law and society scholarship. Dr. Kawar received the award at the association’s annual convention in New Orleans.
Dr. Kawar was honored for her book Contesting Immigration Policy in Court: Legal Activism and Its Radiating Effects in the United States and France (Cambridge University Press, 2015). The award committee said that the book was fascinating, lucidly written, and a clear example of socio-legal research at its finest.”
Dr. Kawar is a graduate of Harvard University. She holds a master’s degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a Ph.D. in law and society from New York University. Dr. Kawar joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts in 2015 after teaching at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
