Two Women Sociologists Honored by the American Psychology Association

Kathleen Slevin recently retired as vice provost for academic affairs and chancellor’s professor of sociology at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Toni Calasanti is a professor of sociology at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg. The two sociologists, who have collaborated on several projects, have been selected to receive the 2015 Florence L. Denmark Award for Contributions to Women and Aging from the American Psychology Association.

Professors Slevin and Calasanti are the first non-psychologists to receive the Denmark Award. The sociologists were honored largely for their books Gender, Social Inequalities, and Aging (Altamira Press, 2001) and Age Matters: Realigning Feminist Thinking (Routledge, 2006).

Dr. Slevin is a graduate of University College, Dublin. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.

Dr. Calasanti has been on the faculty at Virginia Tech since 1987. She is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Kentucky.
