Betty Bernhard, professor of theatre at Pomona College in Claremont, California, died on March 21 at her home.
During her more than 30-year career at Pomona College, she directed more than 30 full-length plays and musicals. Her research was focused on the Indian theater. James Taylor, chair of the department of theatre at Pomona College, said that “in all her work, Betty was an outspoken champion for theatre by, about, and for women, minorities, and other underrepresented groups.”
Bernhard joined the faculty at Pomona College in 1984. She was a graduate of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo and held a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon.
