Susan Alford, associate executive director of the Youth Learning Institute at Clemson University, was appointed director of the South Carolina Department of Social Services by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.
In making the announcement, Governor Haley said, “I needed someone who understood what it’s like to be on the front lines. I needed someone who knew what it’s like to lead and to motivate. I needed someone who worked with victims, who had worked with offenders, who had worked with abused children. I was asking for a lot and I think I got better than that.”
Alford joined the staff at Clemson University in 2007. Previously she was chief of staff and associate director for policy and planning for the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.
