In Memoriam: Susan Beth Horwitz, 1955-2014

Susan Horwitz, a professor emerita of computer science at the University of Wisconsin, died last month at a hospice facility in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. She was 59 years old and suffered from stomach cancer.
Dr. Horwitz was an expert in programming languages and software engineering. She served on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin for nearly three decades before assuming emerita status this past April. She was hired as an assistant professor in 1985 and was promoted to associate professor in 1991 and full professor in 1996. From 2012 to earlier this year, she was the faculty director of the residential learning community, Women in Science and Engineering (WISE).
Professor Horwitz was a magna cum laude graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, where she majored in ethnomusicology. She earned master’s and Ph.D. degrees in computer science at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
