Seventeen Women in New Higher Education Administrative Positions

Heather Evans was named director of the Leadership Education Collaborative at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She has served as interim director since August and previously was director of fraternity and sorority life at Virginia Tech. Before joining the staff at Virginia Tech, Evans was associate director for student activities and leadership at Radford University in Virginia.
Evans is a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, where she majored in business administration. She holds a master’s degree from Radford University.
Susan M. Salvador was appointed vice president for enrollment and student affairs at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, Massachusetts, effective July 1. Currently, she is vice president of student services at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York.
Dr. Salvador is a graduate of Siena College in Loudonville, New York. She holds a master’s degree from Pennsylvania State University and a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Michigan.
Yolanda Bisbee was promoted to executive director of tribal relations at the University of Idaho. She has been on the staff at the university for 22 years, serving most recently as director of the College Assistance Migrant Program and interim indigenous affairs officer.
Dr. Bisbee holds a bachelor’s degree in office administration, a master’s degree in education leadership, and a doctorate in education, all from the University of Idaho.
Suzanne Rosell was appointed director of sponsorship and sales for the athletics department at New Mexico State University. She is a former development officer for the Emporia State University Foundation in Kansas.
Rosell is graduate of Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, and is working toward a master’s degree in business administration at New Mexico State University.
Pamela Smart-Smith was promoted to assistant director for academics at the Language and Culture Institute at Virginia Tech. The institute provides language instruction to more than 50o students from over 50 countries. Smart-Smith will provide guidance, training, and mentoring to instructors in the institute’s English language program.
Smart-Smith is a graduate of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where she majored in political science. She also earned a master of public administration degree at Old Dominion. Smart-Smith holds a second master’s degree from Virginia Tech and is currently working toward a doctorate in curriculum and instruction.
Janet Waldron was named vice chancellor for finance for the University of North Texas system. She has been serving as senior vice president for administration and finance at the University of Maine.
Waldron is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and has done graduate work at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.
Nicole Evans was promoted to associate provost at Jackson State University in Mississippi. Since 2010, she has been serving as assistant provost for institutional research, planning, and enrollment management.
Earlier in her career Dr. Evans served as director of institutional research at Jackson State.
Renata S. Engel was appointed associate vice provost for online programs at Pennsylvania State University. She had been serving as associate dean for academic programs and a professor in the College of Engineering at Penn State. Professor Engel has been on the Penn State faculty since 1990.
Dr. Engel is a graduate of Penn State with a bachelor’s degree in engineering science. She earned a Ph.D. in engineering mechanics from the University of South Florida in Tampa.
Kimberly A. Grieve was promoted to vice president for student services at the University of South Dakota. Since 2012, she has been dean of students at the university. Prior to joining the administration at the University of South Dakota, Dr. Grieve was assistant vice president and dean of students and retention at Lourdes University in Sylvania, Ohio.
Dr. Grieve is a graduate of Michigan State University. She holds a master’s degree and a doctorate in higher education leadership from the University of Toledo in Ohio.
Brandy Cox was named associate vice chancellor for alumni and the executive director of the Alumni Association at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. She has been serving as the senior director of university programs for the Oklahoma State University Foundation.
Cox is a graduate of the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas, where she majored in radio, television and film. She earned a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Arkansas.
Elizabeth Bejar was promoted to vice president for academic affairs at Florida International University in Miami, effective July 1. She currently serves as vice provost for academic affairs and previously was director of academic support services at the university.
Dr. Bejar is a graduate of the University of Miami. She holds a master’s degree from Florida International University and a doctorate in higher education administration from Boston College.
Lynn McCraney was appointed vice president for student success and enrollment management at Fort Valley State University in Georgia. She was the special assistant to the president at Middle Georgia State College in Macon and earlier was dean of students at Macon State College.
McCraney holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master of public administration degree from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville.
Nicole Pride was named chief of staff to the chancellor at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. Since 2010 she has been serving as associate vice chancellor for university relations at the university.
A native of New Jersey, Pride is a graduate of North Carolina State University. She holds a master’s degree from Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in organizational leadership at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Terry Martinez was appointed associate vice provost and dean of student life at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, effective in July. Currently, she is the interim dean of student affairs at Columbia University in New York City.
Martinez is a graduate of the University at Buffalo of the State University of New York system, where she majored in social work. She holds a master’s degree in applied psychology from New York University.
Rochelle Makela-Goodman was named director of gift planning in the Office of Development at Princeton University in New Jersey. Since 1999, she has been a development officer at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, most recently serving as vice president for advancement.
Makela-Goodman is a graduate of Centenary College in Hackettstown, New Jersey.
Marie Hansel was promoted to vice president for academic affairs at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights, Illinois. She has served in the post on an interim basis since 2013 and previously was dean of health and industrial technology and director of nursing at the college.
Dr. Hansel is a graduate of Governors State University in University Park, Illinois. She holds a master degree from the Calumet campus of Purdue University in Indiana, and a doctor of nursing practice degree from Governors State University.
Karen Gleason was appointed associate provost at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is a professor of chemical engineering at MIT. Dr. Gleason has been on the university’s faculty since 1987.
Professor Gleason holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a master’s degree in chemical engineering from MIT. She earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley.
