In Memoriam: Gridley McKim-Smith

Gridley McKim-Smith, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Professor in the Humanities at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, died on October 19, after a brief illness. She was a scholar of the art of Baroque Spain.

Professor McKim-Smith joined the faculty at Bryn Mawr College in 1982. She was promoted to associate professor in 1985 and to full professor in 1992. Kim Cassidy, interim president of Bryn Mawr, stated, “Professor McKim Smith was a wonderful teacher, a supportive adviser, and a valued mentor to generations of undergraduate and graduate students. She exemplified the scholar-teacher model, cared deeply about her students, and worked tirelessly to promote the excellence of the college.”

Dr. McKim-Smith was a graduate of Tulane University in New Orleans. She held a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in fine arts from Harvard University.
