Anne Meyers has served on the faculty at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, for the past 40 years. She is retiring at the end of this month.
Meyers first came to what was then Madison College in 1965 as a first-year student. At the time only women were permitted to live on campus although there were men commuter students. She earned her nursing degree in 1969 and went on to earn a master of social work degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She joined the social work faculty at the university in 1973 and has served there ever since, including a term as department chair. When the social work program became an academic department in 1989 with Meyers at the helm, there were 50 students enrolled. Today there are more than 250.
